Introducing the Katana60 - a more ergonomic layout for 60% boards.

Submitted by Baris Tosun on Sun, 04/02/2017 - 15:51

I started working on the original Katana nearly a year and a half ago. Back then the main goal was to make a mechanical version of the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, with various improvements. While work on a splittable version, and even a tentable version continues, the project took a tangent when a friend offered to make me a wooden 60% case.

Stoner Rock Jam Collective: Now on Bandcamp!

Slightly edited version of a post I made on facebook earlier today:

Last November I started a project: the Stoner Rock Jam Collective. The idea was to get some rock loving musicians in a room and hit ‘record’ for 4-5 hours - each session is entirely improvised.

Every month I book a room at a rehearsal studio (in Vienna) and we go again. I’ve been at it for 5 months now, and my goal is to continue for at least a year, or until I have enough material for a compilation.

Jam Collective and the need of a better process

Submitted by Baris Tosun on Thu, 02/02/2017 - 08:31

The 4th Jam Collective session is coming up this Sunday and I'm barely half way through mixing the last session. That's partly my fault - I haven't really made time for it until now - but there are other factors. The big one is that we had a 5 hour session last time. That's over 4 hours of audio to work on!

I don't need to listen to the whole session from beginning to end: Normally, once I have a good basic mix, I only really need to cut the tracks where they begin and end, with a cursory check to make sure the levels are still OK.

First attempt at cushioned leather wrist pads

Submitted by Baris Tosun on Sun, 01/22/2017 - 18:23

I made a start with my new cushioned leather wrist pads this weekend. I only wanted to trial the technique of shaping moist leather around the edges and it works rather well - it gives a really nice, smooth looking finish.

In doing so I realised that I didn't want to finish the leather around the Magic: the Gathering cards I use for the base. The leather looks and feels so nice that I must finish them off with the right materials.

End of a stressful week...

What a week I've had. Went live with a tricky Drupal 8 based website at work - I ran into more than the usual hiccups during development and going live. I'll spend the weekend reflecting on the causes and measures that can prevent them in the future. A certain amount of the issues arose from an unfamiliarity with composer. Those issues will iron themselves out as I become more familiar with it. It would also help a great deal to update our install script for Drupal 8 projects to utilise composer more heavily in the creation, development and maintenance of our Drupal 8 projects.

Birth of the jam collective

Clancy and I have been to my studio in Turkey a number of times now, and last summer we acquired a drum kit. I learned a lot about mic'ing and mixing drums. But as always, the holiday was over too soon. I wanted more, so I decided to start a monthly jamming session, where I could mic the sessions up and get tonnes of sound files to work with.

Katana keyboard update

Submitted by Baris Tosun on Sat, 01/07/2017 - 17:36

Had a long conversation with Troy about the hinge keyboard design today. Having used the Katana for a while now, I've been thinking of more ways to improve the design.

We're still doing some research in the run up to an interest check/group buy. The most important developments are related to a PCB design. Having a PCB for the board will allow a much thinner build, something which will appeal to all potential buyers of the board - myself included.

The customary first post. Basically, its the start of the year and I've been putting this off for far too long. I want a place to document the many hobbies and pursuits in my life, and my thoughts relating to them.

I'll also use this site as a hub for some of the more popular projects and/or posts I make online.

2014; Return to Planeswalking

A couple of my friends flew to Milan last weekend for the M:tG Modern Gran Prix. None of the guys made it to the second day, but a friend from our testing group came away with a respectable 6-3-0 record (6 wins, 3 losses, no draws), which is really good for his first professional all-day tournament abroad. I can see our weekly testing continuing in the new year, and it's fair to say me and the guys want to compete in more tournaments next year.
